Link to Officer Nomination Form

Throughout the month of August we will be collecting nominations from members of Redeemer for prospective church officers. Your nomination is critical since elders and deacons must be gifted by Christ for office (Ephesians 4:7-12), recognized by the congregation as being so gifted (Acts 6:1-6), elected by congregational vote (Acts 14:23) and then ordained by the oversight commission (Acts 6:6). We expect that men gifted to serve in these offices will be recognized by many in our congregation. Thus one nomination will not result in an invitation to participate in the officer training class. Please do not nominate a man simply because you feel we need more officers. We are looking for those men God has equipped to shepherd and serve His church however many that may be. Remember that elders are primarily called to “shepherd our church” while deacons are to be “ministers of mercy.” The gifts required for these two offices are different, though many of the qualifications are the same. Please prayerfully consider your nominations remembering:

“Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)  He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap. Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.” (1 Timothy 3:2-10)

Prior to attending the officer training class, each nominee should prayerfully consider his schedule. If it appears that personal/vocational commitments, when combined with the responsibilities of church office, will make it difficult to serve with freedom and enthusiasm, then the nominee will either make adjustments in his personal/vocational commitments or decline the nomination.
